BIIF volleyball: Ka Makani falls in state semis

Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls volleyball’s magical run ended Friday at Kalani High School.

Second-seeded Ka Makani fell to Le Jardin in four sets, moving to the consolation side of the bracket. HPA will play No. 4 Kapaa in the third-place match at 3:30 p.m. today in Honolulu’s Cannon Activities Center.

Ka Makani beat the Bulldogs in the first set — 25-17 — thanks to teamwork led by seniors Margot Lewis and Mya Pinkert sophomore Chloe Willman. However, Le Jardin never let its foot off the gas for the remainder of the contest, winning in 26-24, 25-14 and 25-18 in the match’s final three sets to advance to today’s state title match against No. 1 Hawaii Baptist at 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs’ Syndey Kennedy led the match with 21 kills, followed by teammate Syndi Gardner with 13. Gardner also led both teams in digs with 18. Collectively, the winning team had seven blocks. Amby Taylor had a match-high 35 assists.

HPA was led by Lewis with 17 kills, followed by Willman with nine. Maile Imonen notched 32 assists. Pinkert led in digs with 17. Ka Makani finished with 10 blocks.

Prior to the semis in the quarterfinal round, HPA handled Damien in three competitive sets Thursday at Kaimuki High School — 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21.

Ka Makani’s Imonen did a tremendous job of setting up the team’s offense, dishing out 23 assists. Willman and Pinkert led HPA in kills with seven apiece, followed by freshman Kaiulani Honda with five.

Ka Makani’s defense ended up making a big difference, notching eight blocks to the Monarchs’ two. Marion Hall of Damien led her squad with 14 kills, along with teammate Tiani Pitt with 12. Trinytee Kaloala reached a match-high 26 assists.

Seabury 3, Kohala 0

Kohala girls volleyball fell to Seabury Hall in the opening round of the HHSAA DII tournament on Wednesday at Kalani High School. The Spartans won in straight sets — 25-19, 25-23 and 28-26.

Although the match was a sweep, the Cowgirls showed fight, as Liana Pine-Ramos led the team with 13 kills. Teammate Mahea Pang followed behind with five, while adding a team-high 22 assists.

On the winning side, Seabury’s Milaniakai led the match with 16 kills, while Clia Kafka had nine. Teammate Destiny Keomaka-Wood dished out a match-high 32 assists.

Seabury went on to fall to Hawaii Baptist in straight sets in the quarterfinals, while Kohala (12-9) fell to Parker 2-0 in the consolation semifinals to end its season.

KSH 2, Kahuku 0

Fourth-seeded Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i girls volleyball swept Kahuku in consecutive sets Friday at Punahou High School, punching its ticket to the Division-I fifth-place match today at 11 a.m. against Baldwin.

The Warriors won by scores of 25-22 and 25-17 in the short-but-sweet match, improving to 19-1 overall.

In the quarterfinal round, KSH lost its first match of 2024 in four sets to Kapolei on Thursday at Punahou High School — 25-19, 24-26, 25-15 and 25-16.

The Hurricanes’ Leila Paraoan tallied a match-high 15 kills, followed by teammate Anny Scott with nine. Tehani Fa‘asiamanu dished out a team-high 22 assists.

On the Warriors’ side, senior setter Maile Kuamo‘o had a game-high 33 assists — setting up teammates such as Mia Polloi (10 kills), Shay Beals (nine kills), Madison-Rose Marsh (nine kills) and Camryn Grace (eight kills). Defensively, Kuamo‘o led the group in digs with 17, followed by teammate Kealohi Dudoit with 15 and Grace with 13.

Kapolei ended up falling in straight sets to Iolani in the semis Friday night at Punahou — 25-17, 25-20 and 25-9.

Farrington 2, Parker 0

After sweeping fellow BIIF opponent Kohala in the consolation semifinals, Parker girls volleyball fell to Farrington in two sets. The paper was unable to obtain the set scores by Saturday’s deadline.

In the DII opening round, Parker fell to fifth-seeded Castle on Wednesday night at Kalani High School. The Knights beat the Bulls in straight sets of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-18.

Castle was led by Trystin Lum, who posted 18 kills, four aces and a block. Lehiwa Kapu recorded a match-high 37 assists.

Parker was led by Takarrah Presley, who had a team-high 11 kills. Basil Au led the team in assists with 22.
